Taking Flight

With Boeing in our backyard, we may sometimes take for granted the incredible role it plays in our country's national security.

The staff of St. Louis Woman Magazine gained seldom-granted civilian clearance to its Integrated Defense Systems to meet and photograph this month's cover subject Barbara Wilson. We were so excited, especially after having waited nearly six weeks to see whether we would be able to include a jet in our shoot. The wait was definitely worth it. It was cool to have such a close-up look at these military jets.

It was even more inspiring to talk to Barbara in person after our writer shared the story of her early preparation and her rise through Boeing's executive ranks. Barbara was one of those people who makes everyone feel comfortable — but you know she's all business.

Barbara's journey shows us how much we can accomplish once we set our minds on a goal — taking the steps needed to get there, from hard work, seeking the advice of others and expanding our "toolkits" (page 20).

It's an enormous pleasure for us to share with you the stories of fascinating women like Barbara who contribute so much to our community — both through their careers and their volunteer efforts.

We hope you agree that we are extremely fortunate to have so many women engaged in such a broad variety of interests.
